New global trend of COVID-19 linked disease in children
In an article published on Wednesday in the peer-reviewed weekly medical journal The Lancet, doctors in northern Italy said they found proof for COVID-19's suspected link with Kawasaki disease, an illness that can inflame and swell blood vessels that supply blood to the heart.
The new evidence came from Bergamo, the city at the center of the country's coronavirus crisis with the highest rates of deaths and infections in the country.
Medical records from the Papa Giovanno XXIII hospital showed that 10 out of 19 cases of Kawasaki disease in the past five years were reported between mid-February and mid-April.
The article reported that eight of these 10 had tested positive for COVID-19, with the remaining two possibly being false negatives, indicating a 30-fold increase after the coronavirus pandemic erupted.
The hospital's doctors wrote that there was a "strong association" between the coronavirus and Kawasaki disease and that this should be taken into account when considering how and when to ease lockdowns.
"Our study provides the first clear evidence of a link between Sars-CoV-2 infection and this inflammatory condition, and we hope it will help doctors around the world as we try to get to grips with this unknown virus. I have no doubt that Kawasaki disease in these patients is caused by Sars-CoV-2," said lead author Dr. Lorenzo D'Antiga, director of child health at the hospital.
Around 25% of children with Kawasaki disease experience heart complications, according to the UK's National Health Service.
It is mainly found in children under five years old and its symptoms include fever, rashes, red eyes, red and puffy hands and feet, and abdominal pain.

Scores of UK and US children have been affected by a rare inflammatory disease linked to coronavirus.
In a tiny number of children it can cause serious complications, with some needing intensive care.
Up to 100 children in the UK have been affected and studies suggest the same reaction is being seen in children elsewhere in Europe.
This was prompted by eight children becoming ill in London, including a 14-year-old who died.
They all had similar symptoms when they were admitted to Evelina London Children's Hospital, including a high fever, rash, red eyes, swelling and general pain.
Most of the children had no major lung or breathing problems, although seven were put on a ventilator to help improve heart and circulation issues.
Doctors are describing it as a "new phenomenon" similar to Kawasaki disease shock syndrome - a rare condition that mainly affects children under the age of five. Symptoms include a rash, swollen glands in the neck and dry and cracked lips.

COVID-19 and vitamin D
Can vitamin D help protect you against the coronavirus? There's growing evidence that supports a connection between the two.

"Vitamin D is a phenomenal molecule in our bodies," said Cardillo. "Vitamin D does boost and modulate the immune system."
Cardillo said it's a pro-hormone that becomes a molecule and is able to go throughout our body. He points to studies out of China during the beginning of the pandemic for a potential connection between coronavirus and vitamin D.
"They started realizing that people that were the sickest in the hospital that had the longest duration of illness had the lowest levels of vitamin D. And these are retrospective observational studies that were done looking at the population in China that have gotten infected," said Cardillo.
He said it may also mean that sick people in general have low vitamin D levels, but nevertheless it's an important piece of information to keep in mind.
So, how do we boost our vitamin D level?
"The first is sunshine. Being out and about in the sun will definitely cause your skin to synthesize vitamin D," said Cardillo. "Sunshine is the best way to get vitamin D levels elevated."
He suggested going into your backyard or taking a walk down the street, but always practicing physical distancing.
Cardillo said you can also supplement by ingesting vitamin D with your meals, such as with fortified milks and cereals, as well as fatty fishes.

Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
The first known human
infection occurred in early December 2019. Molecular clock approaches suggest a
similar, or slightly earlier, date of origin. An outbreak of 2019-nCoV was
first detected in Wuhan, China, in mid-December 2019. A phylogenetic study
based on published genomes suggests that the transmission was likely from a
single infected animal. The virus subsequently spread to all other provinces of
China and to more than twenty other countries in Asia, Europe, North America,
and Oceania. Human-to-human spread of the virus has been confirmed in China, Germany,
Thailand,[Taiwan, Japan, and the United States.
On 30 January 2020, 2019-nCoV was designated a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). As of 1 February 2020, there were 11,974 confirmed cases of infection, of which 11,814 were within mainland China. Cases outside China, to date, were people who have either travelled from Wuhan, or were in direct contact with someone who travelled from the area. The number of deaths was 259 as of 1 February 2020.
