The Present Perfect tells
us about the past and the present:
She has
had her motorbike for over seven years.
Jack has
repaired the chair.
(So it’s all
right now.)
|
The Past Simple tells
us about the past, a time which is completed:
Tom and I played a
game of chess and he won.
Jack repaired the
chair.
(It may be
broken again now.)
|
It has
stopped raining now, so we don’t need the umbrella.
(=it
isn’t raining now.)
It stopped raining
for a while, but now it’s raining again.
(=not it has stopped.)
Use
the Present Perfect for new or recent happenings:
- Abby has had a baby! It’s a
girl.
- It’s the second time I have been on a
plane.
Use the Past Simple for
things that are not recent or new:
- Shakespeare was a poet, playwright and
actor. He wrote 38 plays.
- My father grew up in France.
